Buy Piñatas

What size piñata should you buy?

Quick answer

For most children’s birthday parties, a standard piñata about 16 to 22 inches (40–56 cm) tall suits roughly 8 to 15 kids. Choose a mini for favors or toddlers, a large 24 to 30 inch (61–76 cm) piñata for bigger groups, and two piñatas for a crowd. Confirm outside dimensions and fill capacity, because shape changes how much fits.

What are the standard piñata sizes?

There is no official standard, and every shop labels sizes differently, so treat “medium” or “jumbo” as a hint and ask for measurements. These approximate classes cover most piñatas sold in the US and Mexico:

Size classApprox. outside sizeRough guest fitTypical use
Mini6–12 in (15–30 cm) tallDecoration, or 1–5 small childrenCenterpieces, party favors, toddler parties
Standard16–22 in (40–56 cm) tallAbout 8–15 childrenMost birthday parties

Extra large30–40+ in (76–100+ cm) tall25+ guests, or displayShowpieces, community events, photos

Traditional starBody about 12–16 in (30–40 cm) across; 30–40 in (75–100 cm) or more point to pointAbout 10–20 guestsPosadas, classic Mexican look

Guest fit assumes everyone gets a turn or a share of the candy, not a full party bag each. Add favor bags if every child should go home with the same amount.

How do you pick a size for your guest count?

Start with the number of people who will scramble for the candy, then adjust:

  • Size up for older groups, a longer game, or a flat shape with thin parts that hold little.
  • Size down for toddlers, indoor parties, low ceilings or small yards. A small piñata that opens with a shower of treats beats a huge one nobody can reach.
  • Add a second piñata rather than one giant one for more than about 25 children or very mixed ages. Two piñatas also shorten the line.

The youngest guests also set the opening style, which can change the size you want. Our comparison of pull-string and traditional piñatas covers that side.

How big is a number piñata?

Number and letter piñatas are usually flat cut-outs: tall and wide but shallow. A typical ready-made number is roughly 20 to 24 inches (50–60 cm) tall and only 3 to 5 inches (8–13 cm) deep, so it holds noticeably less than a round piñata of the same height.

  • For a two-digit age, buy two single numbers, one combined piece, or one number plus a themed shape.
  • Thin digits such as 1 and 7 have the smallest cavities, so ask what the actual digit holds.
  • Many number piñatas serve as a photo backdrop first. If you want to keep it, a pull-string version leaves the shape mostly intact.

Why doesn’t outside size tell you how much candy fits?

Outside measurements include fringe, horns, legs and points, none of which hold candy. What matters is the usable cavity, and that depends on shape:

  • Round and box shapes, such as balls, cubes and cakes, waste little space.
  • Flat shapes, such as numbers, letters and logos, are shallow, so volume drops quickly.
  • Sculpted characters have heads, arms and tails that are often too narrow to fill.

As a loose reference, a standard round or box piñata is often filled with about 2 to 3 pounds (roughly 1 to 1.4 kg) of small wrapped candy; treat that as a planning figure, not a capacity rating. The hanger has to carry the full load, so don’t overfill. To estimate from real inside measurements, try the piñata candy capacity calculator, and still ask the maker for the recommended load.

How much space do you need to hang a piñata?

  • Height: start with the piñata around the player’s head height, with enough rope above it to raise or lower it.
  • Swing zone: clear a circle wider than the stick plus the player’s arm, then add a generous margin. Keep it away from walls, windows, glass doors, tables, pools and the waiting line.
  • Anchor: use a sturdy branch, a beam, or a rope between two strong points. Avoid light fixtures, gutters, ceiling fans and thin branches.
  • Indoors: ceilings are often too low for swinging, so a pull-string or smaller piñata usually works better inside.

Will a large piñata fit in your car and home?

Large and extra-large piñatas are light but bulky. A 36-inch (about 90 cm) piñata may not fit in a small sedan’s trunk, and points, horns and fringe crush easily. Before you buy:

  • Measure your trunk or back seat, including the door opening.
  • Plan where it will wait before the party: somewhere dry, out of direct sun and away from pets.
  • Don’t leave it in a hot car for hours. Heat and humidity can soften glue and fade tissue paper, which matters in places like Phoenix in summer.

Big builds also cost more to make and much more to ship, so check the piñata price guide before settling on extra large.

Frequently asked questions

What size piñata works for a first birthday?

Many families choose a mini or small piñata and let an adult open it, or use it mainly as decoration. Leave out small candies and toys, which are choking hazards for children under 3.

Is a bigger piñata harder to break?

Not necessarily. How hard a piñata is to open depends more on its materials, layers and construction than its size. Ask the seller how it is meant to open.

Can a piñata be too heavy once it is filled?

Yes. The loop, hook and shell all have limits, and an overloaded piñata can tear free or split early. Ask how much weight the hanger is meant to carry.

Are piñata sizes measured with or without decorations?

It depends on the seller: some include points, horns or fringe, others measure only the body. Ask which, and ask about the fill cavity separately.

Can I order a piñata in a custom size?

Many handmade makers can scale a design up or down, though price and lead time change with size. Tell the maker the outside dimensions you need.

What size piñata do I need for a classroom party?

For a class of 20 to 30 children, one large piñata or two standard ones usually works, often pull-string so turns move quickly indoors. Check school rules on candy and allergies first.
